The Astrology of 2022 — bullet journal spreads
Bullet journaling is a really important part of my spiritual and magical practice. There are so many ways you can integrate magic and astrology into your journaling practice. Creating year-ahead astrology spreads is an amazing place to start. By creating these spreads in your own journal, you can start to internalize the movements of the planets throughout the year and come into a deeper understanding of what 2022 has in store.
The goal of this blog post is to share my process for creating my year-ahead spreads, plus share some example templates. These templates are meant to inspire you and share how I set up my journal.
Check out my interview on the Living Tarot podcast discussing the astrology of 2022 for more info about what all these dates mean. And if you want to know exactly how these dates and degrees will affect you, don’t forget you can book a year ahead astrology consultation with me!
I’d love to see what you come up with! Tag me in photos of your spread on Instagram (@meridiantarot) or let me know how you adapted these templates in the comments below.
Getting started in your bullet journal
I like to dedicate the first 20 or so pages of my bullet journal to “year at a glance” spreads. These spreads include calendar overviews of each month, my goals for the year, that type of thing. I suggest dedicating at least 3 pages to your astrology of 2022 spreads, although you can always adapt as you see fit.
The astrology of 2022: where are the planets?
In this spread, I include a high-level overview of what part of the zodiac each planet will travel through in the year ahead. I begin with Pluto, the slowest moving planet, and go all the way to Mercury. (Note: I forgot to write it down in the image, but Pluto stations direct at 26° Capricorn on October 8, 2022!).
This gives me a sense of where the “hotspots” are in the zodiac, so that when I am working with a client or I’m writing about a transit, I have the info fresh in my mind.
For the slower moving planets (Pluto - Mars) I included the degrees they travel through and the dates/degrees of their retrograde cycle. For the faster moving planets (Venus and Mercury), I just noted their retrograde cycles.
Timeline: the astrology of 2022
This spread is similar to the first, but displays the information in a different format. In this version, we see what sign a given planet is in during the year.
I find it really helpful to see the visual representations of how quickly planets change signs during the year. At the top of the timeline, we have the Sun and the signs it moves through. Below that, we have Venus, Mercury and the Moon. The Moon moves so quickly that I just included the New and Full Moon signs.
The slower moving planets are on the bottom half of the timeline. It’s easy to see how much faster Mercury and Venus move in comparison to the outer planets. For Pluto, I have indicated the degrees it moves through in Capricorn, since it only moves a couple per year.
New and Full Moons of 2022
Who doesn’t love a New or Full Moon spread?! This is a very bare-bones/minimalist version of a lunar calendar. There are lots of different embellishments and flourishes you can add to your version of this. But all the basics are there: date (you could add the sign if you had the space), zodiac sign and degree.
I really enjoy seeing how the dates/degrees change over time. We got from having the New Moons at the beginning of the month to the end of the month. And the degrees slowly change, too, with the New Moons moving from the middle of the zodiac sign to the end.
Writing down the degrees and signs helps me remember that we live in spirals — nothing is ever static, nature is always changing. And this is the goal of astrological journaling: to understand the fundamentals of astrology in a deeper, more embodied way. It’s one thing to KNOW the degree of the New Moon will change during the year, but it’s another thing to see and feel that progression.
This is the gift of astrology: it helps you live in rhythm with the cosmos. It gives you something to orient around that is ancient, eternal, and outside of capitalism or human-created structures. The movement of the planets are outside of you, and yet, they are consistent and reliable. You can measure and observe them.
The purpose of creating these spreads is not to have a beautiful finished object at the end of it. It’s to get out of your head and into your body. Through writing down and creating the spread, you more deeply memorize and internalize the information. You’re spending time with the archetypes. You’re getting to know them.
I hope these templates can serve as a guide for you to create your own Astrology of 2022 bullet journal spreads. Download the templates to see full-sized versions. All of the info in the graphics is updated for 2022, so use this as your guide!
