Mars in Taurus (January 6 - March 4)

Mars takes on the role of agitator and shit disturber in 2021, even more so than usual. Every time Mars is in a Fixed sign this year, they will add an explosive energy to the brewing Saturn-Uranus square. And we start out with a bang in January, with Mars entering Taurus and lending its excessive energy to unstable Uranus.

We have had six months of Mars in Aries, and this transit marks a significant shift away from the "Cardinal crunch" that dominated the energy of 2020, and towards the Fixed signs, which will bear the brunt of the 2021 astrology. So if you have a Fixed sun, moon or (ESPECIALLY) rising sign, this is going to be a big year for you.

From a technical perspective, Mars doesn't love to be in Taurus. This is a sign opposite from one of Mars' home signs, Scorpio (in the traditional rulership scheme, which I follow, Mars rules Scorpio). Mars' fiery and aggressive nature is at odds with the Venus-ruled Fixed Earth sign. Mars wants to rush head in and take control, but Taurus lends itself to a softer, slow and steady approach. You might feel impatient or stagnant during this time, like you're trying to run with lead boots.

But the big headline about this month is that Mars and Uranus are in the same sign, and will make an exact conjunction at 7° on January 20th. Uranus brings instability, change, revolution and revolt. Mars brings aggression, anger, passion, ambition and drive. Uranus wants a revolution and Mars says, "Why not now?"

This is mood dominates the rest of January and February, so watch out for how this "off with their heads!" energy will manifest in your life. Whatever House in your natal chart contains Taurus is in for a big boost of revolutionary fervour.

As the month continues, the inner planets will move into Aquarius and form squares with Mars. These are tense aspects that often motivate us to change things. We become impatient or frustrated and that conflict forces us to make a change or find a resolution. However, these aspects are happening in fixed signs — these are signs that are concerned with building and growing. Fixed signs take a really long time to get ready and start moving — but once they go, they are in it for the long haul.

In your personal life, think about the energy and events of January and February as being push you need to start making some long-term changes. Collectively, we are looking at a period of uncertain, dramatic change, and disruptive events. Do what you can to make your personal life as peaceful and settled during this time. We're going to need all the calm we can get.
