July 23 & 25: Jupiter brings the love
Leo season kicks off with some yummy transits with Jupiter. On July 23, Mercury in Leo trines Jupiter in Aries. This transit can make you more expressive, able to see the big picture, and encourage you to tell the world about your ideas. Try to be aware of how much space you are taking up and don’t forget to boost the ideas of others if you have an audience.
On July 25, Venus in Cancer will square Jupiter in Aries. Watch out for your spending and consumption on this date — Venus square Jupiter can make you say “fuck it” and blow your budge ton a whim. Venus square Jupiter can also bring up themes of jealousy and yearning. Remember that envy can be instructive. It tells you about your values, and what YOU want from your life. It can give you direction and vision. This is a good day to observe your jealousies and reflect on what they tell you about your desires.
July 26 - 31: Mercury goes through the gauntlet
But then things start to get tough. This is the beginning of a dramatic series of transits that will last until early August. After Mercury in Leo squares Mars in Taurus on July 26, it will go on to square to Uranus and the North Node in Taurus on July 28 and then oppose Saturn in Aquarius on July 31. This means that Mercury is stuck between a rock (Saturn) and a hard place (Mars).
Watch out for sharp words, feeling defensive, irritable conversations, or extra criticism coming your way over the next few days. You (or others around you) might be snarky, irritable or aggressive, especially with words. Be careful about what you say, speak, write, post, text, etc around this time — it might be taken the wrong way and cause harm you weren't intending.
Mars is debilitated in Taurus, meaning that we are much less likely to fight fair. Mars in Taurus holds onto grudges and has a hard time expressing its anger. Watch out for sudden outbursts that feel like they come out of nowhere, especially around July 28, when Mercury squares Uranus and outbursts become more likely.
July 28 - a very dramatic New Moon in Leo
This is a very potent New Moon, one that is imbued with the energy of major transits. The next 28 days are likely going to see some shocking developments and major changes on the world stage. The seeds that are being planted right now will have lasting effects.
The New Moon takes place at 5° Leo and is trine Jupiter in Aries. On its face, this is a pretty positive aspect, one that gives the Sun extra power and authority. However, Jupiter is currently stationary and preparing to turn retrograde tomorrow. This means that Jupiter is likely unable to fulfill its side of the bargain. If you received an offer of support from a mentor, teacher or authority figure, that support might end up falling through later on.
The real action of this New Moon features Mercury square Uranus and the North Node. Watch out for anxiety and restlessness today. Mercury square Uranus can cause lots of mental stimulation — racing thoughts, new ideas, sudden downloads, and scientific breakthroughs galore. You might feel extra wired and unable to focus today. This is a time to bring out all your favourite grounding and soothing practices. Smell some lavender, drink your favourite calming tea, do some yin yoga, get your feet in the dirt… whatever supports your nervous system the best.
August 1 - a big bang: Mars conjunct Uranus and the North Node in Taurus
Ok kids, buckle up. on August 1, we have one of the biggest transits of the year: Mars conjunct Uranus and the North Node in Taurus.
Mars is the planet of war, violence, aggression, ambition and conflict. Uranus is the great revolutionary. It’s breakthroughs and freedom and independence and free will. When Mars and Uranus come together, it can make us extra impatience and reckless. You might find yourself extra irritable and reactive around this time.
Mars conjunct Uranus can bring forward sudden or immediate action. This can be helpful if you have been stuck in a pattern of lethargy, apathy or malaise. Mars-Uranus can give you the sudden burst of energy you need to break out of a rut or to take on a massive challenge that you have been putting off.
But if you are someone who tends to be more on the extraverted or reckless side of things, this transit has the power to make you even more impulsive. This is thrill-seeking energy.
The North Node (also known as Rahu) is also involved in this triple conjunction. The North Node makes things more intense. It amplifies what is around it. It makes it manifest in the material world. The North Node is the head of a dragon, endlessly hungry and set on devouring whatever it touches.
This exaggerates the Mars-Uranus conjunction, making it extra powerful and intense. It also makes this transit even more important in the collective. Keep an eye out for stories in the news that have themes of sudden violence, surprise attacks and eruptions of anger. But you can also watch for themes of liberation and freedom — people fighting for their rights and willing to break through barriers in their struggle.
In your personal life, you might find yourself navigating themes of anger — either your anger or other people’s. If you do find yourself wanting to lash out at others, try to find other ways of expressing that energy — screaming into a pillow, going for a run, dancing or some other way to release the rage. Or yell into the #processing-and-venting channel — that’s what it’s there for!
If you have planets/placements between 15°-20° of Fixed Signs (especially Taurus or Scorpio), you are more likely to feel this transit more acutely.
August 2 - good day for an apology
After a very tumultuous few days, Venus swoops in with a sextile Mars and Uranus on August 2. If you got swept up in the drama of the past week, tis is a great day to apologize. This transit could also have you craving a fun, sexy time — Venus sextile Mars is perfect for flirting and socializing, while Venus sextile Uranus can inspire a desire for romantic thrills or some kind of breakthrough in your relationships. Or maybe you have an idea for a new creative project that you want to dive into.
Remember, astrological energy doesn’t turn off and on like a lightbulb. You will most likely still be feeling yesterday’s Mars-Uranus-North Node conjunction right now. Venus can help, but she can only do so much. Keep an eye out for the Mars-Uranus-North Node themes to continue to reverberate for the next day or two.
August 4 - new tools to fix the problem
On August 4, Mercury saunters into Virgo, one of its favourite places to be in the zodiac. Mercury both rules and is exalted in Virgo, meaning that it has a lot of power, strength and capacity to do its job and express its nature.
After going through the wringer in the past two weeks, this is a breath of fresh air for Mercury. Most likely, there have been a lot of changes and shake-ups in your life since July 26. Now that Mercury is in Virgo, you will have more capacity to do something with all of those changes… whether it’s fix them up or rebuild from the ashes, Mercury in Virgo can help get you the tools you need for the job, and the focus you need to follow through.
August 6 - limits are tested
Whatever breakthroughs Mars initiated back on July 31/August 1, when it conjoined Uranus, by August 7, you might find yourself confronted by limits, restrictions and rejections. If you tried to undertake some kind of massive project last week, there will likely be some kind of challenge to the long-term viability. Saturn puts limits and restrictions on Mars’ actions.
Mars can be restless and impatient (especially in Taurus), while Saturn sees the long game. Your independence might be challenged, your actions limited because of something outside your control. Try to conserve your energy and not flail against systems that won’t budge. Part of playing the long game is knowing when to fight and when to find another way around.
August 10 - halfway through eclipses
On August 10, right before the Full Moon, the Sun forms a square to the Lunar Nodes. This means we are officially halfway between eclipse seasons, and the Sun is activating points in the sky that connect to long-term themes and changes in our lives. This is a good time in about what has changed in your life since the April 30 and May 16 eclipses and think about what might come up again in October/November.
August 11 - One hell of a Full Moon in Aquarius
Holy wow, this Full Moon in Aquarius on August 11 is a LOT. I mean, this whole zodiac season and lunar cycle thus far have been pretty intense, but things will likely culminate and peak around this day.
This Full Moon is special because the Moon will be conjunct Saturn in Aquarius and both the Sun and Moon are squaring Uranus in Taurus. The Sun and the Moon are acting as amplifiers to Saturn and Uranus, bringing forward the themes of structure and revolution that have been present since 2021, when Saturn and Uranus squared each other.
Watch out for themes of order vs change. A Full Moon conjunct Saturn reveals your limits, boundaries and where you need to say “no” to consolidate or organize your energy. Saturn often brings up challenges and limits that, while annoying, are necessary. We can’t have unlimited, exponential growth — that isn’t sustainable. If you work within the limits/structures that Saturn gives you, you will ultimately be successful in the long term.
But the square to Uranus throws a wrench into those plans. Squares to Uranus can make us restless and irritable, yearning for change and frustrated with the slow pace of progress. On this Full Moon, Uranus will show you what needs to change — and spur you to action to do the thing.
This could look like adapting to the pressures of your environment: the price of beef is going up, so you start looking for more vegetarian meals. Gas is expensive, so you break out the bus pass for local trips. Or maybe an unexpected opportunity gives you the chance to make a long-term change.
It’s hard to honour the need for change and freedom with the need for structure and safety. During this Full Moon, you will have a chance to explore what that equilibrium looks like for you. Maybe you have been stuck and stagnant — if so, Uranus can offer some much-needed liberation and motivation to burst through that rut. But if things have been chaotic and unsteady, let Saturn show you how to bring more stability and order to your life.
August 12 - It’s selfie time
On August 12 Venus moves into Leo. Generally speaking, Venus in Leo is a really lovely and vibrant transit. When in Leo, Venus tends to be more expressive and communicative than when she is in Cancer. This is a Venus who is confident and powerful, ready to take charge and be a leader.
Venus’ journey through Leo won’t be without some hiccups — just like Mercury and the Sun, Venus will also square Uranus and oppose Saturn. But at least, for now, we get Venus co-present with the Sun (the ruler of Leo) and a trine from Jupiter in Aries. This adds some much-needed relief to the Leo parts of our lives. You might find yourself feeling more extroverted and outgoing around this time. And especially if you are a Fixed Rising sign, Venus has the potential to bring some peace and diplomacy to the parts of your chart that have been activated by the Saturn-Uranus-Mars nonsense.
August 14 - Challenges lead to long-term solutions
On August 14 the Sun runs head-first into Saturn. This tension has been brewing since the Full Moon on August 11th, but it’s time for the showdown. Sun opposite Saturn brings up themes of confrontation between your goal/desire/vision and the situation or circumstances you are in. The astrologer Chris Brennan often talks about how Saturn presents roadblocks, challenges or obstacles to overcome, forcing you to either develop yourself to overcome them or find a new path around them. The Sun just squared Uranus, which inspired new ideas and rekindled desires. But Saturn is here with a reality check.
For more information about what this transit means for you, think back to what happened when Mercury opposed Saturn on July 31. This will likely be another chapter in that story.
Meanwhile, Mars in Taurus forms a trine to Pluto in Capricorn, adding a layer of ruthless intensity to the proceedings. Mars trine Pluto can make us extremely focused, possessive and zealous. You might find yourself extremely focused on your goals on this date, ready and willing to overcome any obstacles Saturn throws your way.
This is a good day for long-term strategy and planning. Try to channel the Mars trine Pluto into identifying your goal and different ways of reaching it. Then, let the Sun's opposition to Saturn inform you with clear-headed certainty, about the challenges in your path.
August 20 — vibe shift
Mars leaves the sign of Taurus and enters Gemini, where it will be for the next 7 months! Mars will station retrograde at 25° Gemini on October 30th and station direct at 8° on January 12, 2023. Mars won’t leave Gemini until March 25, 2023. This is a long time to have Mars in this part of our chart, so this is a big deal.
Mars in Gemini can be very scattered. Mars in Gemini wants to do all of the things, all at once. Mars represents our energy and drive, and in Gemini, that energy goes in all different directions. You might be more easily distracted right now, possessed by a bunch of different ideas and unsure of where to direct your focus. You have so many opportunities, it can be hard to pick just one! If you don’t harness this energy with a clear vision or single goal, you can waste a lot of time going in circles.
Tips for Mars in Gemini and the upcoming retrograde: slow down! Make sure you don’t say “yes” to everything and that you aren’t over-committed. Mars will be coming back around to review and restructure how you are using your energy — so if you do try to do it all, Mars will likely force you to drop something eventually.
If you have a Mutable rising sign (or have important planets/placements in mutable signs), this ingress and the upcoming retrograde will feel extra potent.
